CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO
Warehouse District, Tijuana, Mexico
âOkay, apparently you know what to do,â Damien said, feeling exceptionally silly talking to a mouse.
The creature twitched its nose, its whiskers moving back and forth. Meddyâs claws scratched at Damienâs palm, but they werenât sharp. He held the mouse up and looked at it directly in the beady, little eyes.
âI hope youâre truly magical and Iâm not putting my faith in a silly rodent who Claraâs mother just replaced every year, but told her was older than her.â
The mouse again wiggled its nose, as if in reply.
âOkay, so you actually know what youâre supposed to do?â Damien asked, still trying to shake off his crazy feelings. âBecause this is quite literally mechanical engineering and you quite literally have a brain the size of a thimble.â
Meddy glared at Damien, real offense in the creatureâs eyes.
The vampire sighed from under his black hoodie. He couldnât be out in the sun much longer. âYou can be upset, but that was actually a generous comparison. If Iâm honest, your brain is smaller than that. Like a shriveled little pea.â
Meddy flashed his teeth and growled slightly. It was actually pretty cute and sort of solidified that Damien was either losing his mind or the mouse was actually magical. He realized that both realities could be true at the same time.
âFine, just donât let us down,â Damien stated. âYou have ten minutes. Thatâs as long as we can hold them off without too much bloodshed. And the longer weâre fighting, the more potential there is for Clara to get hurt, and I donât think either one of us want to risk that.â
To his surprise, Meddy actually shook his head.
Damien sighed. âYes, that settles it. Iâve gone bat-shit crazy. Iâm conversing with a mouse.â
He realized that if Clara was there sheâd make a joke about how only he could go bat-shit crazy because of his vampirism. Then he would have rolled his eyes and said something about how at least he wasnât a dirty hippy.
The whole imaginary exchange made him miss her even though they hadnât been gone from each other for long. He simply didnât want anything to happen to her, but he also couldnât protect her all the time. She had proven that she could do that on her own. And Damienâs job was to be her partner, which meant holding up his end of the bargain and being there when he said he would be.
Damien lowered the mouse to the ground, and Meddy immediately hopped out of his hand and scurried away. He watched as the tiny rodent easily slipped under the chain-link fence and hurried across the parking lot. It would be easy for Meddy to get past the guards surrounding the Hummers. No one would notice him and what he did would be crucial to their plan.
Checking over his shoulder, Damien ensured that the orange Lamborghini was out of sight, completely covered by branches and leaves from a nearby tree on the other side of the warehouse.
